Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics Associated With Increased Risk of Retinal Detachment

This group of antibiotics has been commonly prescribed for pneumonia, sinusitis, GI problems, and cystitis. Now, I have learned, that they may increase your chances of developing a retinal detachment. Recently, we have found out, that in addition to developing a retinal detachment, this group of antibiotics also relaxes ligaments. Included in the list of Fluoroquinolones are the following:

Cipro, Cipro XR, Proquin
Factive
Levaquin
Avelox
Noroxin

The take home message is use this group of antibiotics for only serious infections and for short periods of time. Be aware of any visual disturbance and report it to your Ophthalmologist immediately.
